Cumberland Family Academy, the district’s family outreach arm, recently joined forces with Mychal Wynn, a nationally renowned educator, author, and college planning expert, to host an informational session titled College Planning 101: Cash for College, Financial Aid & Scholarships. Mr. Wynn has partnered with families across the country to help students gain access to millions of dollars in scholarships and financial aid.

Building a Love for Literacy

This Masterclass Session for Today’s Families – Building a Love for Literacy – features Dr. Kimberly Johnson, a children’s author, and educator. Dr. Johnson received her Doctorate in Curriculum, Teaching, and Leadership from Northeastern in Boston, MA. She has authored 22 children’s books. Her most recent book, It Starts with Me!, was co-written with Dr. Bernice A. King, the youngest child of civil rights leaders Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King. She currently serves as an assistant professor at Clemson University and an early literacy lead instructor for the National Head Start Association’s Bias Busters Program.

Dr. Johnson is passionate about education but even more passionate about making sure that educators and families know their value. She grew up in a household with grandparents who could not read or write, yet they encouraged her to be the best person she could be. Now, she has committed her life’s journey to “empowering our children to know that they can succeed, no matter what their circumstances are.”
